American Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

  • 1/2 c Butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 c Powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. Pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp. Milk


  1. In a mixing bowl, beat/whip the butter for 5 minutes until light, pale, and doubled in volume. This step is important as it makes the butter light and airy, setting a great texture for the frosting.
  2. Gradually add the powdered sugar, 1/2 cup at a time or so, beating well between each addition. The frosting may become a bit lumpy towards the end of this process, keep going!
  3. Once the sugar and butter have been fully incorporated, add the vanilla and half the milk. Beat until combined. Add more milk until desired texture and creaminess is reached (the milk thins it out, and a little goes a long way).
