Buttercream Frosting

  • 1/2 c Butter, softened
  • 8 oz Powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp. Milk


  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, beat the butter on medium-high for 7 minutes.
  2. Turn the mixer down to low. Add the powdered sugar in batches and beat until the sugar is fully incorporated and smooth.
  3. Beat in the vanilla and 2 tsp milk. Turn the mixer up to medium-high and beat for 7 minutes, occasionally scraping down the sides.
  4. If the buttercream is too thick, add milk 1/2 tsp at a time and beating for 1 minute until you reach the desired consistency.
  5. Yields enough frosting for 8-10 cupcakes. Triple this recipe for 2 dozen cupcakes or to coat a 9" layer cake.
